Mohammed Rafi was one of the most iconic and prolific playback singers in the history of Indian cinema. Born on December 24, 1924, in the city of Kotla Sultan Singh, Punjab, India, Rafi's career spanned over four decades, during which he lent his voice to thousands of songs across various languages, including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, and many more.
Rafi's rich, versatile, and soulful voice made him a favorite among both music composers and listeners. He had a unique ability to adapt his voice to suit different genres of music, from classical to pop, qawwali to ghazals. He could sing with equal ease and finesse in high-pitched notes as well as low ones, and his mastery over the nuances of Indian classical music gave his songs a unique texture and flavor.
Rafi's contribution to Indian film music is immeasurable, and he was the preferred singer for many of the legendary music composers of his time, such as Naushad, Shankar-Jaikishan, and Laxmikant-Pyarelal. He worked with many famous lyricists, including Shakeel Badayuni, Sahir Ludhianvi, and Gulzar.
Rafi won numerous awards and accolades for his contribution to Indian music, including six Filmfare Awards and the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer. He was also honored with the Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards in India, in 1967.
